Anonymous attack Greek central bank, plans 30-day cyberattack campaign against others

Notorious hacking collective Anonymous says it’s launching a month-long attack against the world’s banks — and Greece seems to be the first target.
Hackers disrupted service to the Greek central bank website Tuesday, a Bank of Greece official said, but the network restored order just moments after the security breach.
"The attack lasted for a few minutes and was successfully tackled by the bank's security systems," the official said, declining to be named.
Anonymous quickly took responsibility for the short-lived hacking, boasting about the breach in a YouTube video featuring a robotic voice and eerie video static.

"Today, we have continuously taken down the website of the bank of Greece. This marks the start of a 30-day campaign against central bank sites across the world,” the group said in the video.
The 30-day take over — which will eventually target American, Chinese, British and other banks — is dubbed Operation Icarus, the mythological Greek who fell into the sea when his wax-and-feather wings melted in the sun’s heat.
“Like Icarus, the powers that be have flown too close to the sun, and the time has come to set the wings of their empire ablaze and watch the system their power relies on come to a grinding halt and come crashing down around them,” the group said.

It continued: “This is the operation to end all others.”
It’s not clear which bank the group plans to strike next.
Anonymous originated in 2003, adopting the Guy Fawkes mask as their symbol for online hacking. The mask is a stylized portrayal of an oversized smile, red cheeks and a wide moustache upturned at both ends.
